26 August 2024

Have you experienced violence or controlling behaviours from someone you care about? NSW Group Program open now

About these groups:

ACON are running an 8 week group program for any LGBTQ person who has experienced; or is currently experiencing; intimate partner, family and/or sexual violence.

For example, you may have:

  • Felt like you were always walking on eggshells
  • Felt your life was being controlled by others
  • Felt like another person was trying to change or silence your sexuality and/or gender, or made fun of your sexuality and gender
  • Been physically or sexually hurt
  • Been made to do things you were not comfortable with

These groups are designed to provide a safe space for you to share your experiences, understand more about intimate partner, family and sexual violence in our communities and to reconnect with yourself and your communities.

Who are these groups for?

These groups are open to anyone who identifies as LGBTQ, regardless of the identity of the person or people who used violence against them. The groups are open to people of all genders. Trans people of all genders are welcome and encouraged to join.

You must be over 18 years old to participate and live in NSW.

Where and when will these groups be held?

Groups will be held at ACON Cafe, Ground Floor, 414 Elizabeth Street, Surry Hills, NSW. The groups will run on Wednesday nights from 6pm – 8pm starting 2 October 2024.

If you can’t attend the group at this time, but would like to hear about future iterations of the program that will take place later please email healthyrelationships@acon.org.au

Who is facilitating the groups?

Each of the groups will be co-facilitated by two experienced social workers.

Safety and Confidentiality

Your safety is our biggest priority. We understand that taking part in this kind of support can create feelings of vulnerability, and raise concerns about confidentiality and safety in small communities. We speak with everyone interested in the group about these concerns to make sure this will be an appropriate and safe space for them.

If you would like to speak about any of these issues prior to registering your interest, you can email Jade at healthyrelationships@acon.org.au

If you feel like now isn’t the right time for you to take part in a group program, but you would like support; ACON can offer one on one counselling, case work and practical assistance to community members who are feeling unsafe in their relationships.

You can call ACON on 02 9206 2000 to connect with this support.

If you need immediate support, you can contact Rainbow Sexual, Domestic and Family Violence Helpline which is for anyone from the LGBTIQ+ community whose life has been impacted by sexual domestic and/or family violence. You can contact them via 1800 497 212 (available 24/7).
