See you at Gay Skate
This evolution of Gay Skate has been running for over 10 years.
The Valentine’s Day Gay Skate has always been a popular way for the community to socialise. It’s a drug and alcohol-free, inclusive space.
Our most recent event attracted over 200 diverse participants plus some non-skating supporters.
Historically in Brisbane, Red Hill Skate Arena was a well-known queer institution and we are so pleased to keep this awesome event alive.
These events have a long history, dating back to the 1970s when roller skating was a popular activity.
In the 1970s, roller skating rinks were one of the few public places where LGBTIQA+ people could gather without fear of discrimination or violence.
This was particularly true in more conservative areas of the country where there were few if any, LGBTIQA+ bars or clubs.
Gay skate events have become an important part of LGBTIQA+ culture and continue to be held in roller skating rinks around the world. They provide a fun and safe space for LGBTQ+ people to socialise and celebrate their identities, while also helping to build community and promote inclusivity.
