Tales From The Other Side
In 2015, ACON’s Anti-Violence Project (no longer operating) produced Tales From the Other Side, Stories of LGBTQ+ domestic or family violence (DFV) Survival. This video presents stories of survival from those who have experienced DFV in LGBTQ+ communities.
ACON produced this video to:
1. Assist mainstream domestic and family violence services to increase their awareness of, and improve their responses to LGBTQ+ DFV.
2. Build awareness by presenting accessible, real life and contemporary stories of DFV relevant to LGBTQ+ communities.
Common threads of the stories include personal experiences of DFV, strategies for survival, challenging myths about DFV in LGBTQ+ relationships, and identifying sources of support (formal and informal) accessed by interviewees.
The video also identifies behaviours and dynamics that are unique to DFV in an LGBTQ+ context, such as using “outing” as a method of control and isolation from LGBTQ+ friends and communities. Other examples include verbal abuse related to gender identity, controlling medication or access to other treatments and ridiculing the other’s expression of sexuality, gender or intersex. If you are experiencing any of these things or think you are a victim of abuse, find out how to get help.
