Trans Pathways, 2017

Trans Pathways is the largest study ever conducted of the mental health and care pathways of trans and gender diverse young people in Australia (859 participants). It is also the first Australian study to incorporate the views of parents and guardians of trans young people (194 participants).

The responses revealed that mental health issues are common amongst trans and gender diverse young people and that young people experiencing mental ill-health faced problems with accommodation, abuse, educational environments that were not safe and inclusive, and a lack of family support.

Trans young people reported experiencing abuse from both within and outside their family, including in intimate relationships. The Trans Pathways report highlights the significant negative impacts of this abuse on mental health and wellbeing.
